RESURC

Integrated Planning for Maximising Synergies in the fast-growing UETD-District as a demonstration of sustainable development in a climate-sensitive urban region.

Project description

RESURC

RESURC was a joint R&D project within the framework of the “Sustainable Development of Urban Regions” programme, funded by the BMBF and supported by the DLR project management agency. The project ran through a 6-month pre-phase and a definition phase from 01.07.2019-31.07.2021. The project was coordinated by IUWA Institut für Umweltwirtschaftsanalysen Heidelberg e.V.

The fast-growing Chinese city of Urumqi is facing major challenges due to its dynamic development. Climate change, emission reduction and sustainable urban development are issues the city will have to address in the coming years.

The focus of the project was an integrated planning approach representing a cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary mode of working. The approach was intended to identify and use synergies that reduce CO₂ and pollutant emissions while increasing the resilience of rapidly growing Urumqi.

Highlights

  • Reduction of CO₂ and pollutant emissions and improvement of the urban climate.
  • Optimisation of supply and disposal systems and strengthening their adaptability.
  • Consideration of systemic and city-regional interdependencies for an integrated approach.
