IGNIS
IGNIS is a completed research project (project duration 2008-2013) funded within the Future Megacities Programme of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The aim of this project was to examine whether and to what extent the valorisation of municipal solid waste can contribute to improved environmental protection, especially the reduction of greenhouse gases and other emissions, and to the creation of jobs. The project city was Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
The scientific basis of IGNIS consisted of practical pilot projects for waste recycling such as composting, fermentation, recycling and improved waste collection. These pilot projects were technically and organisationally optimised and scientifically accompanied and analysed.
Another essential component was the creation of a reliable inhabitant-related waste database for different urban areas in order to support decentralised scaling and city-wide scenario planning.
